Have you ever heard of Chicago being referred to as Chiraq? How does that make you feel? For instance, on April 22nd 2014, Micheal Daly wrote in an online news source, "President Obama may have gotten our troops out of Iraq, but the gunfire in his hometown of Chicago is still earning it a searing nickname coined by young people who live there. Chiraq." CHI-PEACE is an effort to turn this reputation around.

While Chiraq is a force that advocates or portrays the violent or otherwise destructive ways, CHI-PEACE promotes The Peaceful Way.

We are about to unveil a list of exciting products, services, and activities to promote CHI-PEACE: The Peaceful Way:

About the Director and Executive Producer,

Dr. Peter K. B. St. Jean

Based on over 15 years of research and action in Chicago, University of Chicago trained criminologist and sociologist, Dr. Peter K. B. Jean, reveals a side of the Chicago crime and peace story that has never been revealed in this way before. Dr. St. Jean is the author of the Chicago based book entitled Pockets of  Crime: Broken Windows, Collective Efficacy, and the Criminal Point of View.   He is also the Founder and Executive Director of the non-profit organization, Peaceful World Movement, headquartered on Chicago's South Side.  He is also the creator of the brand and movement known as CHI-PEACE.

Dr. St. Jean is currently an Associate Professor of Sociology, and Director of Criminal Justice at North Park University, Chicago.

From the moment of birth, most of us were socialized, at least to some extent, to learn how to avoid bringing more trouble and harm to ourselves, and others. Although we at CHI-PEACE teach Peace Management and other strategies for peaceful living, as a beginning, we ask all people to exercise what they already know about, "taking the peaceful way out" in every possible interaction.

Based on almost two decades of intensive field research in his native country of Dominica in the Caribbean, Chicago, IL; and Buffalo, NY our founder believes that much of the solution to violence is to make peace profitable. Therefore, he developed CHI-PEACE to help make that belief a reality. Join us in the struggle.

What is CHI-PEACE?

Synopsis of CHI-PEACE Documentary

The high crime reputation that the City of Chicago has gained and maintained for many decades, has made this wonderful city a subject of popular discussion locally, regionally, nationally, and internationally. This has even earned Chicago the dreaded nickname of CHIRAQ, because of the perceptions of more violence in Chicago than in war torn Iraq.

Is Chicago really more violent than Iraq? If so, how and why? However, there are several aspects of Chicago's reality that remain untold, and need to be heard loud and clear. In this documentary, based on over 15 years of research and action in Chicago, University of Chicago trained criminologist and sociologist, Dr. Peter K. B. Jean, reveals a side of the Chicago crime and peace story that has never been revealed in this way before. Dr. St. Jean is the author of the Chicago based book entitled Pockets of  Crime: Broken Windows, Collective Efficacy, and the Criminal Point of View.   He is also the Founder and Executive Director of the non-profit organization, Peaceful World Movement, headquartered in Chicago. He is also the creator of the brand and movement known as CHI-PEACE, the peaceful way.
